WHAT ARE ZIP FILES?

ZIP files are "archives" used for distributing and storing files. Zip files contain one or more files. Usually the files "archived" in a Zip are compressed to save space. Zip files make it easy to group files and make transporting and copying these files faster. Zip files save time and space, and make downloading software and transferring e-mail attachments faster. Typical uses for Zip files include:

  • Most files available on ftp sites, bulletin boards and electronic services like CompuServe are distributed as archives. Two benefits of using archives for electronic file distribution are that only one file transfer operation ("download") is required to obtain all related files, and file transfer time is minimized because the files in an archive are compressed.
  • It is often useful to send a group of related files to an associate. Rather than distributing individual files it is often easier to distribute the files as an archive to benefit from the file grouping and compression.
  • Some files are important but used infrequently. To save disk space simply compress these files into an archive when they are not used, and decompress them only when needed.

A good program for this is WIN Zip.  A trial version is available for download and the program cost is $29.00. This makes the download faster, and insures that all your information is included.

HOW MUCH DOES THIS SO CALLED "FREE" SITE COST ME?

The cost of placing your family data on this site actually costs you exactly NOTHING - NADA - NIX! Keep in mind that all the so called free sites on the Internet are able to give you actual free space because they sell advertising, on your site, to various business. These ads pay for upkeep and administration of the web site. Somewhere in there, I'm sure, money finds it's way into someone's pocket. We do not allow outside advertising nor do we sell it.

HOWEVER, ..... the cost of an Internet Service Provider to host this domain, is part of the operation that someone has to pay for. We must also be prepared to pay for additional space on the server if sites become too large. THERE IS NO ATTEMPT TO MAKE MONEY FROM THIS DOMAIN! The cost of registration for this domain has been donated by "The Business Pages" and NJ Enterprises, however, the day to day cost must be covered somehow, or this site can not survive. That is why I have decided to make this site open to all for ONLY A DONATION! I ask that you donate any amount you can to help cover the expense of operation. There is NO set amount, and if you can't afford anything, that's OK, you may still place your family pages here. If you wish to donate, please send cash, check or money order to:

WHAT IS A "GEDCOM" FILE?

GEDCOM is a standard file format for exchanging information between genealogy programs. The acronym GEDCOM stands for GEnealogical Data COMmunications. The Family History Department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) developed the GEDCOM standard and almost all genealogy programs use and/or recognize it.

You can use GEDCOM to transfer information into your genealogy program from another ( i.e.: PAF, FTM, Roots, Master Genealogist, Legacy, etc.) genealogy program that supports GEDCOM and vice versa. By using GEDCOM, you can avoid retyping all of your family information when you switch from one program to another.

Please go to the HELP files in your genealogy program for instructions on EXPORTING a GEDCOM file.

CAN I "FTP" MY OWN DATA TO "THE GENEALOGY TREE"?

No. We're sorry, but there are several reasons for this;
                    1.   "FTP" is an advanced process that many people do not know or understand. Our primary purpose in this site is to make placing your family pages on the Internet as easy as we can. The responsibility of placing the information on the site is taken by the Domain Administrator, who by the way is not paid. This is being done for the "love of genealogy".

                    2.   With so many different people accessing the site, there is a huge logistic problem that has to be overcome. User names and passwords must be retained in order to insure that the proper individual has the right to place information on the site. This alone, could become a nightmare. To be able to do this, could easily turn this site into a very large commercial enterprise. We feel that keeping it SIMPLE is the best way to go, at least at this time.

DO YOU ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS FOR THE DONATIONS?

At the present time, we have not set up for accepting credit cards. Many people are still leery of placing their card number on the Internet, plus there is more cost involved. As this site grows and warrants it, we may take another look at credit card use but for the present we accept donations only by cash, check or money orders.
